Halloween = Head Lice?
Prevent head lice this Halloween
They feed on human blood and might go after your kids this Halloween! This isn’t a joke. It’s lice.
Anytime you get groups of kids together, especially young kids they are hugging and putting heads together. Add all the fun masks and wigs they are sharing and passing around for Halloween and passing head lice seems to becomes a huge risk.
If you are renting or borrowing costumes you don’t have to be worried about lice, as they can’t survive off the head for more than 24 hours (or 30-40 minutes in the dryer on high heat). While swapping head gear back and forth can spread lice, it’s pretty uncommon to get lice like that. The bigger issue is the close contact we have with friends and family we are spending time with at Halloween.
While fomite transmission accounts for less than 3% of head lice cases, direct head to head contact puts us at far greater risk. If your kids are anything like mine, there was a lot of hugging and selfies and group photos begging taken over Halloween, more than costume or head gear swapping. This happens more often than we realize on a daily basis.
Since stumbling upon a case of head lice in your home can very commonly take between 4-6 weeks on average to get rid of, prevention is key.We challenge parent’s to prevent head lice from spreading this Halloween by using a few simple steps!
